A direct line can be traced from the black-and-white histrionics of waifish flapper babe of yore Fay Wray and the full-color scream queens of today’s gore and horror extravaganzas. When Fay Wray wailed and wilted in the grasp of the big title ape in King Kong (1933), she had already been emoting up a storm in silent films for a decade. How was she to know that the combination of a very attractive woman in peril, a skimpy outfit, and a slip of nip would turn out to be such a successful and long-running Hollywood formula? “A slip of nip?!” you say. Well, it’s a subject of debate among skinthusiasts whether or not Fay’s nip comes out as a result of Kong’s unsteady hand. Even Mr. Skin isn’t sure about crediting Fay with a nude role. He has narrowed the potential slippage event to two scenes, though: one where she is being roughly handled by Kong and another where she is flailing in the water, presumably after being dropped by the ape. However, the near-90-year-old black-and-white footage makes it hard to tell for sure. One thing we can tell for sure is that her nipples poke through her thin white dress in a scene where she’s standing on a boat. So while Fay may not be nude in the film, she’s braless and evidently cold! The Canadian-born cutie acted in dozens of projects after Kong but could never replicate the success or state of undress of that role. This Wray of sexiness passed away in 2004, aged 96.
